InsiderAdvantage has learned that a study committee looking at tax reform will not reveal its recommendations until the eleventh hour prior to this year’s legislative session, but sources say a proposal to hike Georgia sales tax to fund transportation is likely to be included. Sources tell InsiderAdvantage that Georgia’s business community, still seeking a solution to long term regional transportation issues, is potentially in support of a plan which would raise the state sales tax by 1%. Those funds would be dedicated to transportation funding. While most experts believe a new dedicated tax would require approval by the public, sources tell IAG that the plan could be implemented by the Legislature without a public vote. Reportedly, as part of this potential plan, a half-percent cut in the personal income tax would accompany the measure in order to help gain public support.
