Former Georgia House Speaker Mark Burkhalter won an open 6th Congressional District seat on the Board of the Georgia Department of Transportation in the first round of voting by legislative members whose district are part that Congressional district.

Burkhalter was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives in 1992 and later rose to the position of President Pro Tem under former Speaker Glenn Richardson. Upon Richardson’s resignation in 2010, Burkhalter assumed the position of Speaker of the House until the election of the new (and current) Speaker David Ralston. He chose not to seek election to the position of Speaker and returned to the private sector that same year.

Mark Burkhalter is a member of the governmental affairs team at McKenna, Long & Aldridge where he is a Senior Strategic Advisor. In recent years has established a strong relationship with businesses and leaders in Great Britain. He reportedly enjoyed strong support from most legislators in his race for the DOT position as well as Lt. Governor Casey Cagle.
