State House GOP Speaker David Ralston, an attorney facing charges that he violated State Bar rules regarding client payments, made a shrewd move by hiring Georgia’s most prominent Democrat trial lawyer– former Gov. Roy Barnes– to defend him and to seek a possible settlement. It is smart because the Supreme Court-appointed “special master” in the case is Mark Dehler, a Democrat married to former Secretary of State Cathy Cox. Dehler will ultimately make a recommendation to the high court, which decides on any punishment.
