The City of Atlanta has approved a $270 million project to convert the Bellwood quarry in Atlanta’s Westside into a reservoir that will hold up to 2.5 billion gallons of water. The reservoir will serve as an emergency backup water supply in case of a severe drought or other crisis. A series of 10-foot wide tunnels will connect the Chattahoochee River to the reservoir, and the reservoir to the nearby Hemphill Water Treatment Plant. Atlanta Beltline light rail back on the menu?
Many Atlantans were dismayed when Mayor Andre Dickens seemingly tabled the idea of light rail along the Atlanta Beltline, the city’s wildly popular and successful pedestrian path. After all, light rail was a core part of the loop’s original vision, meant to connect the city all around its (eventual) 22-mile loop.
