Atlanta-based artist Martin Dawe will create a statue of Martin Luther King, Jr. for the Capitol grounds, according to an announcement Monday by Gov. Nathan Deal and Rep. Calvin Smyre. Dawe was chosen to replace sculptor Andy Davis, who was killed in a 2015 motorcycle accident.
During a Memorial Day ceremony last year, Deal announced his plans to erect a statue of King on Capitol ground. Smyre hopes to be able to have an unveiling in early 2017.
