Democrats call for help for migrant surge
A trio of Georgia Democrats are calling for the extension of a federal grant they say is needed to help meet the needs of “historic numbers of migrants seeking asylum” in Georgia. The Federal Emergency Management Agency gave the state some $6.9 million to help feed and shelter an estimated 46,000 migrants who have arrived from the Mexico border. However the deadline to spend those funds was slated for December 31st and millions remain unspent, so U.S. Reps. Nikema Williams, Hank Johnson, and Lucy McBath are requesting an additional year to allocate the funds to “address this critical need.” The migrant surge is part of a national trend, where record numbers of migrants have poured across the border, many from South America.
