The Georgia Institute of Technology is increasingly recognized as a world class institution of higher learning (even rival University of Georgia Bulldogs would have to grudgingly, if not privately, admit it). This is underscored this weekend by the visit of Panama’s President Juan Carlos Varela,a 1985 Tech graduate who loves his alma mater, Atlanta and, yes, the Atlanta Braves baseball team. Before he speaks Saturday at a Tech graduation ceremony in McCamish Pavilion, Varela, his wife and entourage will take in tonight’s Braves game at the new SunTrust Park stadium. Ga. Senate voices support for police training center
The Georgia Senate last week found time to vote on a couple of issues other than the redistricting process they were called back to Atlanta to sort out – one of those being the Atlanta law enforcement training center that has become a focus of national controversy. On Friday a resolution was introduced voicing support for the facility, which the Senate broadly supported by a 46-5 margin. All those opposed were Democrats, (three more abstained from voting) but the vote shows widespread support just as recent polls have.
