Followed by backlash from both the public and the media, Gov. Brian Kemp this week reversed his decision to allow Georgia teens to obtain driver’s licenses without taking a road test. The 20,000+ teenagers who have taken advantage of the waiver must now pass the test by October to be allowed to remain on the roads. Traffic safety experts had decried the state’s initial approach, pointing to the fact that some 20% of teens fail the road test on their first attempt, and that car accidents are the number one cause of death for teenagers.
