Savannah Mayor takes to the streets

Savannah Mayor Van Johnson, as a black former law enforcement officer, has a unique perspective on the ongoing protests that have often ignited into violence over the past several days.  Johnson joined the protests Sunday, marching with those infuriated by the death of George Floyd at the hands of a Minneapolis police officer and who are using the incident to try to push for better relations between law enforcement and the black community.  However he also took a hard stance against those using the protests to incite violence, staying out onto the streets into the evening until the city’s 8:30 curfew.  According to Johnson, there were a handful of arrests but only one incidence of property damage Sunday.  Johnson says he supports the protests, but hopes they will lead to a greater dialogue because, “At some point, we have to get past the protest, and we have to get to the work.”  Johnson’s handling of the very difficult situation has his ship RISING…
