Atlanta has a population of 496,000, and an incredible $127 million is owed in back water bills. When you divide $127,000,000 by 496,000 the total is $256.05 per man, woman and child. This means that for a family of four the average overdue water bill owed is $1,024.20. And remember, not every account is overdue so the amount unpaid on the accounts in question is much higher. The best guesstimate is that there are 100,000 city accounts, and the city says there are 27,000 delinquent ones. So it’s reasonably accurate to estimate the average unpaid water bill is around $4,100. And —get this!— the city finally is saying it will try to collect.
