A year after the residents of Springfield, in Effingham County, voted 56%-39% in favor of allowing the sale of liquor, the city opened its first ever liquor store, Local on Laurel Spirits. Effingham has historically been a dry county but local officials were tired of seeing residents travel over the border into neighboring Chatham Co. to get their liquor fix, (wine and beer sales were already allowed). Springfield will also now allow Sunday sales of beer and wine, and for booze to be sold in restaurants on Sundays.
