Gwinnett County has been one of the fastest growing counties in the country for nearly 30 years now. More people means more restaurants, more businesses and more convention centers. The latest is the newly re-opening of the Gas South Convention Center, which began construction in February of 2020. The state-of-the-art facility now offers 90,000 square feet of exhibit hall space, with a 21,600 square-foot ballroom, 24 versatile meeting rooms and outdoor gathering areas.
“Last night’s event celebrated the history of our facility and gave us an opportunity to look to the future of our campus,” said Stan Hall, CEO of Gas South District. “With the completion of this project, the construction of the Westin hotel, and the potential for a mixed-use development on our campus, Gas South District will be a hub for not only the community, but for guests bringing their meetings and events to Gwinnett County as well.”
The opening means Atlanta’s tourism sector will continue its steady growth over the past few decades. Not every convention can land in Las Vegas or Disney World and Atlanta’s proximity to so many places, a convenient interstate access and Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport – with direct flights coming in from just about everywhere. Atlanta is one of the top tourist cities/regions in the country, thanks to not only its charms but it’s hard to beat easy access and proximity.
The adjacent Westin Atlanta Gwinnnett hotel and its 348 rooms is expected to be completed in 2024. The convention center is the latest piece in the Gas South District, a 118-acre campus that also boasts the 13,000-seat Gas South Arena, home to Atlanta’s minor league hockey team the Gladiators and its professional lacrosse team, the Georgia Swarm. The campus is operated by the Gwinnett Convention and Visitors Bureau and frequently hosts some of the biggest names in music, such as Beyoncé, and major trade shows like the Georgia Bridal Show. It even has hosted the NCAA Women’s Gymnastics Championships. The Gas South Theater also offers music and shows in a more intimate setting, at just over 700 seats, as oppose to the larger Gas South Arena.
“The additional square footage and upscale design of Gas South Convention Center creates new opportunities to attract additional trade show and convention business to Gwinnett County,” said Monte Ortel, General Manager of Gas South District. “We are looking forward to welcoming guests into our facility that was designed to integrate nature, creativity, and a sense of collaboration throughout the space.”
