Residents of Hiawassee in northeast Georgia were shocked when plans were floated by the Tennessee Valley Authority to draw down Lake Chatuge some 20 feet for up to eight years to renovate the dam. The lake is a major economic driver for the area, particularly during the summer when it draws in tourists from all around the South. Meteorite lands in Georgia
On Thursday afternoon many Georgians noticed a blaze of light flash across the sky. It wasn’t a bird or a plane – it was a meteorite plummeting to earth. And starting on Friday a very specific breed of tourists descended on the state; meteorite hunters. Armed with rare mineral magnets, the hunters searched fields and construction sites in and around West Forest, in Henry County, searching for chunks of space rock that can be sold for more than $100 a gram.
