Soccer field at Five Points MARTA station

When MARTA partnered with Atlanta United FC and non-profit Soccer in the Streets this fall to build a soccer field at the Five Points station, the idea was met with guarded optimism.  Offering free soccer and mentoring programs for youth along with adult leagues whose revenue will help pay for it all seems a noble idea, but soccer at a MARTA station?

Well, the early results are in, and so far MARTA soccer has been a resounding success.  Already the program is planning on opening nine new fields at stations across the city, including at Arts Center, College Park, Brookhaven, and Sandy Springs.

The fields’ proximity to MARTA eases one of the biggest issues facing inner city kids and organized sports – lack of transportation to and from practice and games.

Atlanta is and likely will always be a football-first town, but with Atlanta United and a slew of new soccer fields springing up at MARTA stations all across the city, look for ‘footy’ fever to take hold inside the city limits.
