The race for Georgia’s 6th Congressional District is beginning to take shape. With several Republicans dropping out of the race — or thinking about pulling out — it’s starting to look like a rematch from two years ago with former Congresswoman Karen Handel and current Democrat U.S. Representative Lucy McBath (D-GA-06) battling it out for the seat.
Late in November, the Republican field went from four to three when State Senator Brandon Beach announced that he was pulling out of the race for Congress and would seek re-election for his District 21 Senate seat.
Then Republican Nicole Rodden — a former Merchant Marine– said she was ending her campaign because she was running out of money.
And earlier this week it was reported that Republican Marjorie Taylor Greene may be pulling out of the race for Georgia’s 6th Congressional District and running for the District 14th seat being vacated by U.S. Rep. Tom Graves. Although she has made no official announcement, she has said she had received “many calls” asking her to switch races.
Even if Greene stays in the race, Handel has shown that she is the favorite among many Republicans. She recently received endorsements from retiring U.S. Senator Johnny Isakson, Governor Brian Kemp, and U.S. Senator David Perdue.
Handel represented Georgia’s 6th Congressional District from 2017 to 2019 after winning the most expensive House election in history — beating Democrat Jon Ossoff. She is out to win the seat back after losing to McBath a year later is a tight race. Ossoff is staying out this race, but is now running for U.S. Senate, challenging incumbent David Perdue.
McBath is the only announced Democrat in the race. She ran her first campaign on gun control and health care.
