A bid to rename the Augusta Riverwalk after Edward M. McIntyre Sr., the city’s first black mayor, has hit a major snag as controversy erupted over the idea. McIntyre took office in 1981 and helped find funding for the Riverwalk, but left office in shame after a felony conviction for extortion. He was later pardoned but his political career was in the tank, leading to three failed mayoral bids in 1990, 1998 and 2002. The Augusta Planning Commission held a hearing on the proposed renaming last week but even with public input couldn’t make a decision, kicking it up to the Augusta Commission for consideration. Proposed Fulton Co. property tax hike
Fulton County homeowners let out a collective groan Monday following the announcement that property taxes will be increasing by more than 12% over the rollback millage rate.
