ATLANTA – It became a three-way race to succeed Rep. Bob Bryant on Friday when Alicia Blakely qualified for the special election before candidate sign-ups closed at noon.

Blakely, a longshorewoman identifying as a Democrat, is coming fresh off of a try for a Savannah City Council’s at-large post. She made it to the runoff last November but lost to Brian Foster.

She joins businessman Josey Sheppard and Carl Gilliard, CEO of Feed the Hungry. All list themselves as Democrats even though the March 29 special election is nonpartisan.

With three on the ballot, there could be a runoff if none garners more than half of the votes cast. That runoff would be May 24, the same day as the primary for the general election.

Bryant, a Garden City Democrat, died Feb. 25. He had announced he would not seek re-election this fall.
