Congressman Paul Broun marches to a different drummer. Unfortunately in this case, the drumbeat sounds more like machine-gun fire. Broun is (successfully) trying to gain attention for his U.S. Senate bid by raffling off an AR-15 rifle, in support of gun-ownership rights. Apparently he thinks he needs to flank his rival Republicans to the right. Sadly, the main thing Broun’s political gambit will accomplish is to reinforce the stereotype of gun-slinging Neanderthal Republicans. At least the Broun campaign could have chosen a model of rifle that isn’t similar to the one that was used to massacre schoolchildren in Connecticut. We’re all for protecting second-amendment rights. But you have to win elections in order to do that. At this rate Broun won’t, because his ship is SINKING.
