The advocacy group Club for Growth announced today that it will support U.S. Congressional candidates Barry Loudermilk and Bob Johnson in their primary runoffs. The endorsement is big news because the Club has immensely deep pockets and a willingness to spend on its candidates. Just last week the group spend over $500,000 on a candidate running for Congress in Idaho, (said candidate lost his race anyway, but the point stands).
Loudermilk finished in first place in the 11th District primary, and will face former Congressman Bob Barr in the runoff. Many viewed Loudermilk already as a favorite in the race, so this support could push him over the edge.
Johnson, who seems to have recovered nicely from the comments he made about the TSA several weeks ago, faces State Senator Buddy Carter in the 1st District runoff to replace U.S. Senate candidate Jack Kingston. Johnson finished behind Carter in the primary, so we will see how much the Club for Growth is willing to spend on the race and whether that money will propel its candidate to Washington D.C.
