Rep. Ben Harbin, R-Evans, turned in a surprise resignation from state House of Representatives District 122, a large swath of Columbia County north of Interstate 20. He plans to work for the Southern Strategies Group government affairs firm, and is the sixth lawmaker this year who has announced their departure. Just the other day Rep. Barbara Sims, R-Augusta, said she’s not seeking re-election to House District 123 which also includes a portion of Columbia County.
No Democrat has a chance to represent Harbin’s turf, since it has voted Republican in every statewide contest in 2014— 74 percent for both U.S. Sen. David Perdue and Gov. Nathan Deal and 78 percent for Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle. Mitt Romney also won 74 percent districtwide in the 2012 presidential election.
