It’s Labor Day in Metro Atlanta and what does that mean? The Braves are out of town but the Chick-Fil-A Kickoff Game will feature Auburn playing Louisville, the Taste of Georgia is at Chateau Elan and Black Gay Pride will take over parts of Midtown and Piedmont Park. Arguably the biggest event of the weekend though is the annual festival for sci-fi, fantasy and gaming fans, Dragon Con.
Officials are expecting a record 65,000 attendees with nearly 80,000 coming to downtown Atlanta for the parade on Saturday. If you weren’t able to shell out the $50 per day for tickets, the parade likely will offer plenty of action for onlookers. Some of the parade marchers will be actors or performers from acclaimed shows, including the Grand Marshall Nichelle Nichols, also known as Lieutenant Uhura from the Star Trek series and movies. Interestingly, Nichols role as Uhura was groundbreaking for African America female characters on television. Nichols’ portrayal broke the usual mold as typically black women had not been given prominent roles. At one point Nichols considered leaving the show but a pastor from Atlanta, Martin Luther King Jr., met Nichols at an event and convinced her she was doing something bigger than what she realized.
