In a bid that could hopefully bring some lessons back home to Atlanta, Georgia Tech is partnering with the National University of Singapore on a new institute to study the future of logistics in Singapore and the surrounding region. In a globalized world, logistics is increasingly important to the economy. Logistics comprises over eight percent of U.S. GDP and Georgia, in particular, is a logistics hub for the country.
Georgia Tech established an Asian logistics institute in the 1990’s with the National University of Singapore and the Center for Next Generation Logistics is a continuation of the relationship. Studying logistics in the third densest country in the world (for comparison’s sake the city of Atlanta has about one-seventh the density of Singapore) presents a great opportunity for students to collect data on not only logistics practices, but also the demands of specific sectors and even specific companies doing business in the region, including DHL, UPS, Intel and IBM.
