Presidential candidate and Texas Senator Ted Cruz made an appearance in Kennesaw on Friday. 1500 Georgians turned out on a chilly Friday at McCollum Airport to hear Cruz talk about immigration, education, the military and myriad other issues.
Atlanta talk radio personality and previous presidential candidate Herman Cain was there, as well as former Georgia State Co-chair for Scott Walker, now State Grassroots Co-Chair for Cruz, Louie Hunter, and fellow State Grassroots Co-Chair, former Chairman of the Cobb County Republicans, Scott Johnson. Cruz’ birthday is on Tuesday and at one point the rally sang Happy Birthday to the could-be president..
Cruz talked about health insurance and how government is getting in the between patients and their doctors. He also vowed that in the first days of his administration he would instruct the Department of Education to end Common Core. Cruz also noted that the Department of Education “should be abolished,” but did not clarify as to whether he would do so.
Cruz said he would also work to secure the border and punish sanctuary cities by withholding tax dollars from those not complying with federal immigration law. Cruz also wants to pass Kate’s Law, which would enforce a mandatory five year minimum sentence in a federal penitentiary on undocumented aliens who are deported and return to the U.S. anyway. Cruz would also end welfare for those in the U.S. illegally.
Regarding the military, Cruz would allow the military to keep and bear arms in situations such as recruiting centers, the site of the shooting in Chattanooga where a terrorist opened fire and killed four Marines.
Cruz also discussed his plan for regulation, leaving no doubt as to where he stands with a joke about regulators and farm pests. “What’s the difference between regulators and locusts?” Cruz asked. “You can’t use pesticide on the regulators.” Allegedly, an earlier listener to this joke said, “Wanna bet?”
Cruz wants to abolish the IRS via the passage of a simple flat tax. Every American should be able to fill out their taxes on a postcard according to Cruz.
The DPG, in an email in advance of Senator Cruz’ appearance, took issue with his immigration policy. “Cruz’s plan would end the 14th amendment’s guarantee to birthright citizenship. It would limit legal immigration, and suspend the popular H1-B visa program for high-skilled foreign workers. Cruz has also vowed to undo President Obama’s executive actions to keep families together.”
Apparently missing the memo that Marco Rubio is catching a lot of heat from primary voters on his too-relaxed immigration stance, the DPG also said “Ted Cruz is more interested in emulating immigration extremists like Donald Trump and Marco Rubio than in actually improving the lives of Georgia’s immigrant families.”
The appearance comes amid a continued dust-up between Rubio and Cruz in a somewhat of a he-said, she-said scenario on previous and current immigration stances. The disagreement got somewhat heated during the past week’s debate and is likely to continue to flare-up in the next month leading up to the Iowa caucuses.
