On Friday, Governor Deal signed SB 367, legislation that aims to continue Georgia’s efforts at comprehensive criminal justice reform.
The legislation is largely based on reforms suggested by the Georgia Council on Criminal Justice Reform found in their near-annual report which was issued in February. The Council is composed of Senator Bill Cowsert and Representative BJ Pak and also several judges, district attorneys, sheriffs and other experts in the criminal justice system. Neither Pak or Cowsert were sponsors of SB 367 but the Council’s report included recommendations in three main areas, the adult correctional system, juvenile justice system and prisoner reentry.
