Metro Atlanta Democrats can rest easy, Manuel’s Tavern has reopened. On August 6th, 1956, Manuel Maloof opened the doors to the bar and restaurant at the corner of Highland and North Avenue that would become a mecca for politicos, journalists, and other locals looking for a casual environment in a neighborhood bar with some tradition. On August 6th, 2016, the bar reopened after a little facelift over the past few months and carried on the tradition.
Originally, the location was particularly handy as a stop for residents of the then “dry” DeKalb County. The bar’s reputation as a home for Atlanta journalists dates back to at least 1964, when the Atlanta Press Club, founded that year, created “Second Tuesdays” at Manuel’s, a regular gathering where members would sound off about anything and everything. Governors Zell Miller and Roy Barnes were frequent guests.
