Perhaps Georgia’s closest Nov. 8 election contest for the state House of Representatives will occur in House District 80 (Brookhaven, Chamblee and a small section of Sandy Springs) between Democrat Rep. Taylor Bennett and Republican challenger Meagan Hanson. The two squared off over key legislative issues yesterday evening at Oglethorpe University in a Brookhaven Post/Chamber of Commerce-sponsored debate overseen by college president Larry Schall.
After opening statements by the two candidates (both are attorneys), questions centered on key issues they would have to address both during the 2017 General Assembly and as they relate to the district.
In addressing Amendment 1, a constitutional amendment on the Nov. 8 ballot to create a temporary state Opportunity School District (OSD) to rescue thousands of students currently in failing schools, the contrast was stark. Hanson supports passage and while Bennett, heavily funded by state and national unions, opposes it.
