There aren’t a lot of good reasons to get up at 6:00 AM on a Sunday morning, but seeing a 14 story building imploded using explosives might just be one of them.

Governor Deal was on hand Sunday morning to bid farewell to the old Georgia Archives building, which was first constructed in 1945 but sat vacant in recent years following concerns over its foundation.  The idea of tearing it down has been floated repeatedly, but it wasn’t until Deal found a way to squeeze enough money into the budget to cover getting rid of the Archives and to build a new top of the line headquarters for the Georgia Supreme Court and Court of Appeals that the state made it happen.

See a neat video of the implosion below, and a word of warning to anyone interested in checking out the next one – (Georgia Dome anyone?) don’t bring your dog.
