On Friday, we brought you a sampling of the bills that passed the legislature on a very long Sine Die. Over the next few weeks, we’ll take some time to discuss some of those bills in detail. As is often the case, a handful of bills ultimately garner almost all of the attention. This year’s media hound bills included campus carry, the adoption bill, “Plan B” for the Opportunity School District and a bill barring private post-secondary institutions from adopting “sanctuary” policies.
For today, we’ll focus on H.B. 154, relating to dental hygienists “performing certain functions under general supervision.” Sponsored by Rep. Sharon Cooper (R- 43 Marietta – and Chairman of the House Health and Human Services Committee), the bill authorizes licensed dental hygienists to provide services (most of the time this would be basic cleanings) that otherwise might be done by a dentist. Georgia was one of the three states, Alabama and Mississippi being the others, that have the requirement to have a dentist present in these situations.
