Days after the Falcons announced another delay on Mercedes-Benz Stadium, now scheduled to be open August 26th for the Falcons’ third preseason game, Falcons owner Arthur Blank and Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed unveiled the plans for the site of the still-standing Georgia Dome.

Naming rights being an important piece of professional sports revenue, the “Home Depot Backyard” will be a 13-acre greenspace on the footprint of the current Georgia Dome site. The site will be used for game day parking, arts and culture events, entertainment and other community events beginning in 2018. “The Blank Family Foundation and the City of Atlanta are really working tirelessly every day to restore and revitalize communities such as Vine City and English Avenue. The step we are taking today is also a part of that effort as well,” said Reed. During his remarks, Reed also touched on the number of jobs and revenue derived from events at the World Congress Center site. “The Home Depot Backyard will serve as a gateway to downtown, to our cultural district and of course to the world’s greatest sports venue, Mercedes-Benz Stadium,” said Reed.
