The Georgia Republican Party convention is coming up June 2-3 in Augusta and is dominated by a lively four-way election by delegates for state chairman to succeed the term-limited John Padgett. Former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich– a longtime Georgian who won the state’s GOP presidential primary in 2012– has joined the fray. He is endorsing John Watson, a one-time top aide to former Gov. Sonny Perdue.
Gingrich tweets: @JohnWatsonGA is my home state’s best chance to keep GA red in ’18. We need his winning record and fundraising skills at the GAGOP. #gapol
The other candidates jockeying with Watson for the top party job are attorney Alex Johnson; Mike Welsh, the 12th District GOP chairman; and state party vice chairman Michael McNeely.
