This weekend in Augusta, Republicans from around the state will gather at the convention center for the 2017 convention. Much of the coverage will surely focus on the Chairman’s race featuring four rather different candidates. Alex Johnson is a long-time activist and “outsider” candidate who is now in his third run for Chairman – not necessarily an outsider anymore. Michael McNeely has been the First Vice Chair of the state party for a couple years and is currently an executive at the Juvenile Justice state agency. John Watson has been involved in Georgia Republican circles and has been the finance director for a number of different campaigns and groups – something the state party may take a particularly long look at. Mike Welsh is the 12th District Republican chair and helped Rick Allen to defeat John Barrow. He also helped establish now-President Trump’s campaign in the district. Four different paths to the race and no shortage of potential drama.

Besides the chairman race though, there will be election for new vice chair spots and treasurer and all the other positions for the state party. As the state party continues to roil from a fundraising shortage and some lingering unity issues following the contentious 2016 – delegates know the party will need every bit of leadership they can get moving forward.
