Fulton County, the largest, most populous county in Georgia, and the city of Atlanta are demanding that Fulton’s Board of Assessors rescind its property tax assessments that went out during the past two weeks. Of almost 320,000 residential plots, more than half saw their values rise by more than 20 percent and residents in 99 neighborhoods were slammed with increases of 50 percent or more.

Fulton County commissioners also call into question the credibility of the assessors (which they appointed, by the way). Commission Chairman John Eaves and Vice Chairman Bob Ellis say homes where values should have been frozen after successful appeals have had their assessments hiked and exemptions were applied improperly or not at all. There also appear to be data errors on all too many land values. Some neighborhoods are treated completely differently than adjoining neighborhoods.
