Today is election day across Georgia and in Atlanta that means selecting a new mayor. If you’ve watched any local news over the past couple months, you’ve likely been bombarded by their ads. And you’ve probably noticed a lot of ads for Keisha Lance Bottoms. They appear to be working.
WSB and the AJC released the final poll of the race last Friday, courtesy of Landmark Communications, and it appears to now be a two-person race. Current city council members Mary Norwood and the aforementioned Bottoms are some ten points up on their nearest rivals and are likely to head to a runoff against each other on December 5. Bottoms is polling at just over 25% and Norwood just over 23%. Peter Aman is the only other candidate cracking double digits in the poll, at 12%. Norwood had previously just missed out on beating Mayor Kasim Reed in 2009 – he won that runoff by just over 700 votes, out of a total of more than 84,000. Bottoms is Reed’s chosen successor and he will likely be very involved in a runoff against his former rival.
