Last week President Donald Trump announced his intent to nominate four new U.S. Marshals to fill open positions, including a pair in Georgia.
The first, John Cary Bittick, would serve as the United States Marshal for the Middle District of Georgia. Bittick, the longtime sheriff of Monroe County, is a former president of the Georgia Sheriff’s Association as well as president of the National Sheriff’s Association.
In the Southern District Trump’s nominee will be David L. Lyons, who recently retired as Chief of Police in the Garden City, Georgia department. Lyons is a former military officer who has also served as police chief in Woodstock and Zebulon.
Both of Georgia’s Senators had good things to say about the President’s announced choices. Said Senator Johnny Isakson, “Our U.S. Marshals provide critical protection for our citizens and support for our justice system. These two Georgians are well-qualified and excellent choices for these demanding roles. I look forward to assisting them with their Senate confirmation process.”
Senator David Perdue echoed those sentiments, stating in an announcement, “Georgia is home to some of the most impressive law enforcement officers in the nation. I applaud President Trump on nominating John Cary Bittick and David Lyons, they will serve our nation well and make Georgia proud.”
Bittick and Lyons will have to be approved first by the Senate Judiciary Committee and then by the U.S. Senate itself before officially receiving their appointments.
