The Horace Orr American Legion Post 29 is again sponsoring the Veterans Memorial 5K and Military Appreciation Celebration on Saturday May 26 at Marietta Square and Glover Park. The race begins at 7:30 am at Marietta Square and you can still register online at www.active.com or www.americanlegion5k.org

The Military Appreciation Celebration will begin following the race award presentations in Glover Park around 10:30 am to honor the men and women who have served and are serving in the military.

This year’s program will have a program featuring U.S. Rep. Barry Loudermilk, and Gen. Joe Jarrard of the Georgia National Guard, and remarks from the leadership of the Horace Orr Post 29 of the American Legion. There will also be a POW-MIA ceremony and the colors will be presented by Troop 435 of the Boy Scouts. At the conclusion of the program there will be patriotic music and pop tunes performed in concert by the Georgia Symphony Orchestra.

Race Committee Chairman Tom Bell says, “All proceeds from this race, military appreciation celebration and other associated events are to promote awareness of veterans’ needs and issues and to raise monies for the charities supported by the American Legion Post 29.”  The charities include the Shepherd’s Men, a special initiative of the Atlanta-based Shepherd Center that works with veterans suffering from PTSD and other illnesses and injuries related to combat, as well as the Georgia National Guard Foundation at Dobbins AFB that works with veterans and active duty personnel related to pre/post deployment and issues such as financial, housing, medical and family issues relating to military service. Another recipient is the Service Office of the American Legion Post 29 that assists and works with needy veterans in Cobb County who need short-term housing, repairs, auto needs and other financial needs.

“Come join in the celebration and help us honor the men and women who have served and are serving in our military,” Bell says. “This is a great family event!”
