In their efforts to pass legislation funding the federal government by October 1, U.S. Senators gave their okay Thursday to H.R. 6157, a comprehensive measure to fund critical areas such as defense, education, and the opioid epidemic.
The legislation would provide a funding boost for disadvantaged students and special education. Georgia currently has a poverty level of over 20 percent, and two-thirds of the 1.6 million students in Georgia’s public K-12 schools are low-income students. Total education spending would increase by more than $500 million over fiscal 2018 in the bill, up to about $71.6 billion.
