Gov. Brian Kemp continues to put his stamp on state government by appointing five members to the University System of Georgia Board of Regents, which oversees 26 taxpayer-supported colleges and universities. The new at-large Regents are Cade Joiner and T. Dallas Smith. They will serve with Harold Reynolds representing the 10th Congressional District, Everett Kennedy representing the 12th Congressional District and Lowery May representing the 14th Congressional District. Report highlights maternity care struggles
Expanding access to rural healthcare has been a key priority for legislators in recent years, but there are still areas where Georgia struggles. One of those is access to maternity care, where according to a study by March of Dimes, nearly half of the state’s 159 counties are considered ‘maternity care deserts.’ That means that some 159,000 women in Georgia live more than 30 minutes from a hospital that provides labor and delivery services.
