HB 71, the ‘Okefenokee Protection Act,’ seeks to protect the swamp by banning mining projects in surrounding areas.  But despite broad bipartisan support, it is stuck in the House Natural Resources and Environment’s Resource Management Subcommittee, and only just received its first hearing last week which comes after Crossover Day.  That means it is likely stalled out for the 2023 session, for better or worse, barring a surprise add-on to another bill that has already crossed over, (see: sports betting).  So expect to see it come back up in 2024, but its fate for this year is DRIFTING…
