HB 71, the ‘Okefenokee Protection Act,’ seeks to protect the swamp by banning mining projects in surrounding areas. But despite broad bipartisan support, it is stuck in the House Natural Resources and Environment’s Resource Management Subcommittee, and only just received its first hearing last week which comes after Crossover Day. That means it is likely stalled out for the 2023 session, for better or worse, barring a surprise add-on to another bill that has already crossed over, (see: sports betting). Proposed Fulton Co. property tax hike
Fulton County homeowners let out a collective groan Monday following the announcement that property taxes will be increasing by more than 12% over the rollback millage rate. The hike, per the over the Fulton County Board of Commissioners, is to increase funding for the 2025 General Fund.
