InsiderAdvantage has learned that– despite some recent headlines and articles in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution– not all staff members of the Georgia Public Service Commission, which regulates the state’s utilities, oppose the continued construction of two new nuclear powered generating units at Plant Vogtle near Waynesboro. In fact, there is division. Some staff opponents simply had their emails discovered through media freedom of information requests and thus have been published.

Indeed, what some in the mainstream media fail to report is that there is a broad spectrum of support for the continued construction of the units. Consider:

· Consumer Energy Alliance President David Holt says: “Energy animates every part of our lives and powers a modern economy. A balanced, broad and diverse energy mix that utilizes all of our resources enhances reliability, protects families and households and underpins opportunities to continue Georgia’s economic expansion and continued growth.” https://consumerenergyalliance.org/2017/11/nuclear-power-georgia-broad-spectrum-support/

· J.D. Van Brink, head of the Georgia Tea Party, says: “Nuclear power is a vital source for inexpensive, reliable electricity in Georgia. Finally, national security interests require that the U.S. remain a leader in nuclear power development. To allow another nation to take the lead would be a big mistake.” JD Van Brink http://www.mdjonline.com/opinion/around_town/around-town-georgia-tea-party-supports-finishing-plant-vogtle/article_f14c7c76-c02f-11e7-86fa-ff6388121335.html

· The Partnership for Affordable Clean Energy supports building Vogtle units 3 & 4: “The world is increasingly dangerous. Over the last 15-20 years, other superpowers and emerging economies have formed alliances around economics, technology and geostrategic goals. China and Russia are building nuclear plants rapidly and taking the United States’ place in guiding other countries to do so.” http://mailchi.mp/energyfairness/nuclear-power-helps-georgia-and-the-nation-2780341?e=d0ca3934b3

· A bipartisan majority of the Georgia Congressional Delegation supports the project completion and Gov. Nathan Deal says: “I am pleased to learn the co-owners of Plant Vogtle Units 3 and 4 have recommended completion of construction of a new clean energy source for Georgians.”

· Public Service Chairman Chairman Stan Wise has already stated: “… The Plant Vogtle project may be in a better position to move forward than the project in South Carolina.” http://www.psc.state.ga.us/GetNewsRecordAttachment.aspx?ID=723

· Former federal Environmental Protection Agency administrator Carol Browner says: “Once Plant Vogtle Units 3 & 4 are completed, they are expected to provide Georgia with carbon-free, low-cost energy for 60 to 80 years to come.” https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/5a00725ee4b076eaaae27158
