The second busiest day of the legislative session is upon us, and dozens of major bills are down to their final opportunity to pass their respective chamber and move on to the other.

Among them:

HB 198 & SB 74: These sister bills have been among the most fiercely contested during the legislative session, with power players under the Gold Dome lining up on either side of the issue of overhauling the state’s certificate of need (CON) apparatus.

HB 511: Rep. Kevin Tanner’s (R-Dawsonville) transportation bill would create a new state transit authority, the “Georgia Department of Mobility and Innovation” (GMobile).  The State Transportation Board has come out in opposition of the bill, asking that transit and the SRTA remain under GDOT’s purview, while other key players including UBER support the legislation.

HB 546: Gov. Brian Kemp promised during his campaign that if he was elected that Georgia’s abortion laws would be “among the toughest in the country.”  This “trigger law,” from his floor leader Rep. Jodi Lott (R-Evans), would for the most part ban abortions in the case that Roe v. Wade is overturned by the Supreme Court.

SB 131: Another nasty fight is over Sen. Burt Jones’ (R-Jackson) ‘Georgia Major Airport Authority Act,’ which would transfer authority over Hartsfield-Jackson to a new state-run agency.  City of Atlanta officials are fighting tooth and nail against the measure in an attempt to maintain control over their cash cow, while major Republican names have lined up to support it.
