As Republican heavy-hitters jostle behind the scenes to be appointed as the replacement for a retiring Sen. Johnny Isakson (R-GA), could the next U.S. Senator from Georgia be… you?
Gov. Brian Kemp on Tuesday opened up the application process for Senate to include all Georgians who meet the requirements, as seen HERE.
While the eventual appointment will likely come from a much shorter list, Kemp said he is “encouraging all Georgians who want to serve in the U.S. Senate to submit their name and qualifications. We will carefully vet the applicants and choose a person who best reflects our values, our state, and our vision for the future.”
Kemp has said he has no timeline for making his selection, noting that the eventual Senator will face a jungle primary in 2020, and then a full re-election campaign in 2022 to serve a full six year term.
Georgia’s other Senator, David Perdue (R-GA), has also weighed in, saying he’d prefer a partner “who can take this fight passionately to the voters.” Indeed, now that Perdue and the eventual appointee will be running on the same ticket, it makes sense that they be on the same page as the campaign trail heats up heading into 2020.
Assuming Kemp’s pick doesn’t come from some random applicant who blows him away, a few names have continued to stay on the tip of insiders’ tongues through the vetting process.
Attorney General Chris Carr is Isakson’s protege and is highly respected in Republican circles. Rep. Doug Collins (R-GA-09) has become one of President Trump’s staunchest defenders in Washington as the ranking Republican on the U.S. House Committee on the Judiciary, and as Kemp well knows Trump’s endorsement carries some serious weight in the Peach State.
Republican Congressmen Tom Graves and Austin Scott are likewise popular in their home districts, while Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan has proven he can run and win a statewide campaign.
But hey, don’t let those resumes intimidate you, apply yourself and be the change you want to see in Washington!
