With protests still raging throughout much of the state, (and country) over racial injustice and police brutality, Rome residents are taking a different approach and “backing the blue.” Around 100 individuals gathered in downtown Rome last weekend to show their support for law enforcement officers, voicing their backing for public safety officers and first responders, who haven’t had a great 2020 so far. The rally included a march from City Hall to the Call to Duty memorial in front of the Law Enforcement Center, meant to honor the 15 law enforcement officers across the nation who have died in the line of duty since May 26 – not a number you see reported much. The city also saw a small counter-rally spring up across the street, however it featured just two protesters holding signs showing their opposing view on the value of the police.
