“Bee City USA”

Dawsonville, in North Georgia, is mostly known for two things – moonshine, and car racing.  Those two acts are historically intertwined, but while we don’t need a history lesson it’s resulted in the city’s annual “Mountain Moonshine Festival” as well as its connection to famous NASCAR drivers Bill and Chase Elliott.  But city officials are looking for a new title for the mountain town – “Bee City USA,” seeking recognition for their work to attract, protect, and educate people on the the importance of bees.  Dawsonville’s City Hall complex is surrounded by newly-installed flower beds used to attract bees, which have been in decline worldwide over the past decade for a variety of reasons.  The certificate, issued by the Xerces Society, would make Dawsonville Georgia’s 11th “Bee City USA,” a high distinction for locales bragging about their bees.
