More than $12 million has been included in the upcoming National Defense Authorization Act for building new helicopter parking aprons for the 41st Rescue Squadron at Moody Air Force Base, just north of Valdosta. Georgia’s Senators Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff worked to secure the funding in the NDAA, which is expected to pass later this year. The parking aprons (think tarmacs for helicopters) are needed to facilitate the 41st’s ongoing transition to the new HH-60W Pave Hawk combat rescue helicopter, used primarily for search and rescue operations. Moody, built in 1941, has a population of roughly 4,500 active military personnel.
