Historically citruses have only really been able to be farmed in states like Florida and California, due to the fact that a single cold snap can kill off the entire season’s crop.  But thanks to researchers at the University of Georgia’s Tifton campus, a new, hardier strain of “Frost” citruses is being grown as far north as Tifton.  In fact, members of the Cold Hardy Citrus Association say that the cooler temperatures of south Georgia will actually produce sweeter citruses (including oranges, grapefruits, lemons, and tangerines) than the Central American variety typically imported and “greened.”  So if you’re in southwest Georgia keep your eye out for the state’s newest, sweetest cash crop.
