In April of 2021 Macon Mayor Lester Miller announced an ambitious plan to demolish 30 blighted houses in 30 days. That initiative, which drew in partners including the Macon-Bibb Tax Commissioner’s Office, the Macon-Bibb County Land Bank Authority, Public Works, Solid Waste, Macon Water Authority, Planning and Zoning, and many private contractors, finished its first round of demolitions ahead of schedule. Subsequent rounds of demolitions, wrapping up in late December, saw an additional 70 structures – all considered Vacant, Abandoned, and Dilapidated – removed. And Miller says the fight against blight is just getting started, with more demolitions slated for 2022.
