Conservationists scored a win last week when U.S. mining company Chemours announced it would not be doing any business in the next five years with Twin Pines Minerals, the company attempting to open a titanium mine on a 740-acre area just miles from the Okefenokee Swamp. Critics have said the mining operation could damage the Okefenokee, one of the world’s largest intact freshwater wetlands. Twin Pines continues to seek state environmental permits, but legislators, including influential state Rep. Ron Stephens, R-Savannah, are working on legislation that would prohibit mining on Trail Ridge, an area of ancient sand dunes that if disturbed could affect water flow into and out of the swamp.
