Editor’s Note: This is one in a series of interviews with Republican and Democratic candidates for Georgia’s 6th Congressional District

Republican Dr. Rich McCormick, who narrowly lost a bid for Georgia’s 7th Congressional District to Democrat Carolyn Bourdeaux in the 2020 election, is now running for the newly-redrawn 6th Congressional District. He is among the large group of Republicans seeking the nomination, and he is pointing to a recent poll by Public Opinion Strategies pollster Robert Blizzard that shows him holding the lead.

McCormick issued a release recently that said he “leads his next closest competitor by 29 points among very conservative voters, 22 points among pro‐life voters, and 26 points among those voters who view President Trump very favorably.”

“The Sixth Congressional District is my community. I lived in Cobb County for 12 years, I work the night shift in the Northside hospital system and serve as a youth minister at Gwinnett Church in Sugar Hill. As a Marine, Physician, and in ministry, I am always ready to serve my community.” said McCormick, in his campaign announcement. McCormick is a former Marine helicopter pilot and an Emergency Room Physician.

The 6th District now includes a considerable portion of the old 7th District including Forsyth County. Democrat Lucy McBath, who currently serves the 6th District, has said that she will challenge Democrat incumbent Bourdeaux in the upcoming election for the 7th District seat.

“Dr. McCormick has the experience, resources and ground game to ensure Georgia’s Sixth District is represented by a battle tested, fearless conservative. America is demanding bold conservative leadership in Congress and Dr. McCormick intends to be the tip of that spear that reclaims the House of Representatives for Republicans,” said McCormick Campaign Manager, Al Chaul.

McCormick lists prioritizing parents and students among his top issues, emphasizing that he will ban federal funding for school districts that teach Critical Race Theory (CRT) or promote remote learning; end mask mandates in schools; encourage school choice and parental options; and support rights “that empower parents against a corrupt school system.”

He is also focused on “opportunities restored” and says he will “stop this slide towards socialism” by creating legislation to:

● Provide real tax relief for middle class families

● Remove unnecessary regulation that limit growth with no benefit

● Promote entrepreneurship and innovation to grow the economy

● Get the supply chain moving and restock shelves

Other priorities he lists are defending the 2nd Amendment, making healthcare “more affordable and sane again,” protecting families and strengthening America by restoring America’s military, and preparing the U.S. troops for the next battle and delivering better healthcare to veterans.

It states on his campaign website that “as someone who sacrificed time with family to serve during times of war, McCormick knows the critical importance of building a military that can defend our national security at a moment’s notice.”

McCormick is a graduate of Morehouse School of Medicine where he was also student body president and completed residency in Emergency Medicine through Emory while training at Grady Hospital in Atlanta. He also received his MBA from National University in California. According to his campaign, he has over 20 years experience in the U.S. Marine Corps and Navy where he served in combat zones in Africa, the Persian Gulf, and Afghanistan. As a Marine, he flew helicopters and taught at Georgia Tech and Morehouse College as the Marine Officer Instructor. In the Navy, McCormick earned the rank of Commander and served as the Department Head for the Emergency Medicine Department in Kandahar, Afghanistan.
