Last summer China banned the mining of cryptocurrency within its borders. Considering that previously 70 percent of crypto was mined there, that left a massive void in the newly-created crypto-economy. It also created an opportunity for small towns like Sandersville, Ga., between Macon and Augusta, to lure companies like Mawson Infrastructure. Mawson built a $365 million cryptocurrency mine – essentially a massive computer server farm – in an industrial park far from residential neighborhoods. The placement was key – crypto mines are extremely noisy, which has become a major issue for some municipalities. But in the 5,500 resident Sandersville it’s a big addition to the local tax base, as well as an opportunity to sell electricity to the power-hungry mine.
