The Columbus City Council has voted unanimously to approve the purchase of the historic Liberty Theatre, which will be reopened following renovations.  The historic theater was once a fixture of the city’s Black community, hosting stars like Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington and Columbus’ mother of blues Ma Rainey.  But the theatre has fallen into disrepair in recent decades, not receiving any large-scale renovations in more than 25 years.  City officials say they will seek out grants and other sources of funding to renovate, upgrade, and eventually reopen one of the city’s most historic music venues.
